At the beginning of his art studies and his life in Berlin, more than 30 years ago, Martin Assig read Blaise Cedar’s poems for the first time. “The big city, a lot of wishes, powerful feelings and dreams. Cendrar’s rhymes of the Easter hymn in New York hit me with full force.” With this edition Assig presents these poems. In addition to his graphic works, Martin Assig creates a colourful oeuvre of wax with the old, rare technique of encaustic.
Martin Assig (*1959 in Schwelm, lives in Berlin) studied at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. In 1993 he was awarded the Käthe Kollwitz Prize. His works have been shown in numerous solo exhibitions, including the Kunstmuseum Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen in Magdeburg (2019), the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam (2016), the Haus am Waldsee in Berlin (2015), the National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia Madrid (2001), the Hamburger Kunsthalle (2000) and the Kunsthalle Kiel (1996). In 2017, an artist space conceived by Assig with around 300 works was presented as part of the exhibition “Me in a no-time state – Über das Individuum” at the Kolumba Kunstmuseum in Cologne.
