The series Blätter (Leaves) comprises watercolors of an autumn leaf as a found image. It is depicted in its natural size, as clear and direct as possible. As a “composition of nature,” the painted leaf appears here as a symbol of an image. Because it seems to be a real leaf and its image at the same time, it creates a more impressive effect than the actual natural leaf. It has freed itself from the state of mere imitation to become something else, an image of and about something—about a leaf and leaves in general, about nature, about the relationship between art and nature, about beauty and the spirit of art.
