Enrico David transforms his work HOW DO YOU LOVE DZZZT BY MAMMY (2009), shown in the exhibition „Maskulinitäten“ in the basement of the Kunstverein, into a board game. A series of photographs—photographs of children from a toy advertisement (one of which is the artist himself) and male models—are juxtaposed with a swinging egg man. The egg—a symbol of fertility and reproduction—is reminiscent of Standing Troll Man, a children’s toy adapted from the Viennese Art Nouveau of the 1910s. Some of the photographs come from a gay mail-order catalogue. The artificiality of the postures and the model’s teeth-blazing facial expression are exemplary for the ultimatum of a gay self-image – for Enrico David, his own sexuality is “a further entanglement of an already problematic identity”. An uncertainty that manifests itself here in the rocking mechanism of the egg man. Enrico David’s diverse techniques (sculpture, textiles, graphics, paintings, installations) meet in the subject of the human body – manifested through traditional craftsmanship and industrial design.

Enrico David‘s (*1966 in Ancona, lives in London) solo exhibitions comprise from the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington (2019, 2018), Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (2018), Sharjah Art Foundation (2016), New Museum in New York (2014), Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel (2009), Seattle Art Museum (2008), Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2007) and Tate Britain in London (2005). His works have also been represented in various international group exhibitions, including Somerset House in London and Palazzo Reale in Mailand (beide 2019). His works were part of the Venice Biennale (2019, 2013, 2003) and the Rennes Biennale (2018). Most recently, his work was shown as part of the group exhibition Maskulinitäten.
