Avocat (Espagne) and Nectarine Blanche (Espagne) have been the offer and price tags of a greengrocer in the Rue du Faubourg Saint Denis in Paris for the last 30 years.
The street is a link between two kinds of Paris: the bourgeois Paris of the central districts and the popular Paris of the northern districts. At the moment, Rue du Faubourg Saint Denis is undergoing an unmistakable gentrification and the high density of different ethnic populations is being pushed further north. For Folly, who is fascinated by the place and the direct way of communication and design of the magnetic disks, the signs address topics such as current availability, globalization and local market supply, while the back of the disks look to the future, as the daily offer for the next day is written on them.
Gina Folly, born in Zurich in 1983, studied at the ZHDK in Zurich and lives in Paris and Basel. She is co-founder of the Zurich-based Taylor Macklin exhibition space, which is now internationally active. Folly’s work has been shown at Ermes Ermes, Kunsthalle Basel, ML Artspace, Kunsthaus Glarus, SALTS, Basel, Spreez, Plymouth Rock, New Jerseyy, CentrePasquArt, Ellis King, Istituto Svizzero, Rome, among others.
