After Rosemarie Trockel, Lawrence Weiner and Kai Althoff, we are pleased to announce Isa Genzken as the author of the 2016 member’s edition. We would like to thank our members with this edition for their faithful support and at the same time make it possible for them to become even more intensively involved with art.
Since the 1970s, Isa Genzken has created a work that is distinguished by its extremely diverse manifestations and with which she regularly expands the spectrum of possibilities in the genres of sculpture, installation, and collage. The innovative potential of her work earned her great recognition early on, so that today she can be regarded as an integral part of the international art scene. In this context, Genzken represented Germany at the 2007 Venice Biennale and was honored in 2014 with a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In addition, this year she had much acclaimed exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin.
The work, which Isa Genzken designed exclusively for the members of the Kölnischer Kunstverein, is a portrait-format digital print showing an anthropomorphic sculpture created in 2006, next to which the artist’s name is printed in black letters. The picture refers directly to the cover of a catalogue published on the occasion of her exhibitions in the Galerie im Taxispalais in Salzburg and in the Secession in Vienna. By reproducing the picture, Genzken underlines the importance of the reproduced sculpture, but also refers to the recurring theme of the self-portrait in her oeuvre.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the artist in particular, whose work strengthens the significance of the Vereinsgabe for the Kölnischer Kunstverein.
