Morgaine Schäfer uses the photos of her own family album to work on questions of identity and her own history. The everyday moments have a high recognition value. The photograph produced for the Kunstverein shows a hand holding a slide showing family members positioning themselves on a staircase for a group picture shortly before departure. The hand is that of the artist. Through the doubling of the picture plane (“picture within picture”) a long past meets, captured situation for a moment in the now. The abbreviation BWS in the work’s title refers to the original photographer “Bernd Werner Schäfer” and is based on music directories in which composers are abbreviated with letters and numbered consecutively. With her archival works, Schäfer creates metaphors for transparent memories that bear witness to the media-specific duality of objectivity and subjectivity.

Morgaine Schäfer (*1989 in Wolfsburg, lives in Köln) studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Prof. Christopher Williams. Her works have been shown in solo exhibitions at the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf (2018), the Baustelle Schaustelle in Essen (2018), and Fiebach Minninger in Cologne (2018), as well as group exhibitions at the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen (2019), Kölnisches Stadtmuseum (2019), and the Setareh Gallery in Düsseldorf (2019). Currently, she is studio fellow of the Kölnischer Kunstverein.
