In his sculptures, photographs and films, Shahryar Nashat is concerned with the representation of the body and the conventions of art education. His works are characterized by a great love of detail, whereby the almost obsessive way of production and presentation takes the viewer into a secret world of forms of artistic gestures and positions.
The title of the work Fingers in Lots of Pies, 2018, produced for the Kölnischer Kunstverein, refers to the English saying “To Have a Finger in Every Pie”, which means to have one’s fingers in every pie, but also refers to the artist’s thumbprint, which was literally imprinted on the work during the production process. This became the only gesture within the work, embedded in its pedestal lying on the table – a cake for a gesture. Casting is like baking. You mix, you pour, you wait.
Shahryar Nashat was born in Geneva in 1975 and lives in Los Angeles. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Swiss Institute, New York (2018), the Kunsthalle Basel (2017), and at Portikus, Frankfurt/Main (2016). Group exhibitions with Nashat’s works have been shown at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Moscow (2018), the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (2017), and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2016).
