These are everyday and intimate moments that Juliette Blightman records in her works (including paintings, drawings, installations, texts, videos) in a diary-like manner. In their radical subjectivity, the personal becomes public and seems to emanate from the exhibitionist self-portrayal conveyed by social media. When the artist captures stylized orgies from a well-known Berlin sex club, paints oversized sexual parts on canvas, presents vulval plant representations, or transplants a cactus into a urinal, not only a certain comedy resonates, but also the question of censorship in art history. Who looks at whom is a question that still determines our patriarchal society.
JulietAmong others, Juliette Blightman‘s (*1980 in Farnham, lives in the UK) works were included in solo exhibitions in the Kunsthalle Bern (2016), the Kunsthaus Bregenz, together with Gerry Bibby (2014), the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin (2010), and most recently as part of the group exhibition Maskulinitäten. Eine Kooperation von Bonner Kunstverein, Kölnischem Kunstverein und Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf at the Kölnischer Kunstverein (2019). As a guest lecturer, the artist taught at the UDK in Berlin, the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and the University Mozarteum in Salzburg (alle 2015). The artist won the Prix K-Way Per4m on the Artissima International Fair of Contemporary Art in Turin (2016).
